Remembering a Man

In 2012, I revisited the Symbolic Expressionist style (see below) that I started painting in China in 2007. Initially, I just started painting the symbols on the walls of my studio because I felt I had become too prescriptive in my art and too left brain. I wanted to re-engage that surrealist, emotional, illogical world of my right hemisphere and felt that unconciously painting the symbols on my walls would kick it into gear. The walls seemed like a great place to work because I didn't have to worry about the cost of canvas and I could work on a large scale.

Initially, I was just painting in abstracted symbols, but these soon gave rise to more realistic representations of ideas that retained some of the symbolic and emotional qualities of the abstracted symbols but were more obviously anchored in cultural representations.
